An expensive scanner does not automatically produce a faster checkout. The common problems are blurred labels, one barcode assigned to several variants, or incomplete product data that still forces cashiers to search by name.
Start with barcodes and SKUs, not scanner brands
Use existing manufacturer codes when they are unique. For store-made products, create stable SKUs and labels that are easy to read. Do not encode prices into SKUs because prices change while product identity should remain stable.
Test at the actual checkout counter
- Confirm support for the 1D barcodes most commonly used in the store.
- Choose USB for fixed counters and Bluetooth only when mobility is needed.
- Test small, curved, glossy, and slightly damaged labels.
- Keep name search available as a fallback.
- Control new barcode creation through a supervisor process.
Checkout speed comes from clean product data, comfortable hardware placement, and a clear fallback—not scanner specifications alone.
